In literature, the incipit refers to the first words of a book. It is oftentimes a make-or-break moment for the reader: they either decide to stick with the story or walk away.

In other words, the very beginning of a story is already a form of contracted presence on our part. What’s the deciding factor to opt in or out?

This painting suggests we opt in when the journey promises to keep us interested, engaged, and committed from a visceral standpoint.
